The updated publication is titled ‘Site layout planning for daylight and sunlight: a guide to good practice’ (BR209 2022) and represents the 3rd revision, succeeding the edition released in 2011.

Reflecting significant advancements, these guidelines incorporate principles from the British Standard for daylight report in Buildings (BS EN17037) initiated in June 2019. Planning authorities frequently consult the BRE guidelines during the evaluation of new development proposals for adequate daylight report.

Crucially, the 2022 update revises the approach for assessing natural light conditions in all residential planning applications and introduces, for the first time, assessments for certain non-residential environments.
